Herman Wilson Garrett, 77, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 in Palm Bay, FL. Herman grew up in South Carolina, where he played football and went to high school. He joined the Air Force and, when transferred to Robins AFB in Georgia met and married Patricia Megahee, who survives him. After military service, he attended Clemson College, as it was then known, and studied architecture. He was a Tiger fan all of his life and was there in the Orange Bowl when they won the National Championship. A career with the U.S. Department of Labor followed and led his family to Brevard County. After retirement, he became a consultant for many companies engaged at the Kennedy Space Center. As a Veteran himself, Herman found a second calling working with the Florida Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) as an Ombudsman, mediating and resolving matters of employment for reservists for over 25 years. He was selected as the Ombudsman of the Year for the Nation and was further honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by ESGR. Herman was a man of strong faith as evidenced by the way he led his life. He is also survived by his three children, Vicki (Stan) Lockard, Lisa (Dave) Noble and Mac (Jennifer) Garrett, and his nine grandchildren (Cody and Dylan Lockard, Kyle and Tyler Noble, Zachary, Taylor, Jacob, Joshua and Jeffrey Garrett) whom he adored. Family will greet friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 21st at Davis-Seawinds Funeral Home, 560 Montreal Avenue, Melbourne, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to William Childs Hospice House.
