Douglas Garvey

Douglas B. Garvey, 87, of Three Rivers, Michigan and the Nettles Island Community, on Hutchinson Island, in Jensen Beach, Florida, died Sunday, May 4th, 2014 at Treasure Coast Hospice, in Stuart, Florida. Born in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, he had been a winter resident or “Snowbird” of Nettles Island, for 44 years. Doug honorably served his country during the later part of World War II in Italy with the United States Army, where he was active in setting up the post war currency exchange there. He also played on the United States Army Football Team, while stationed there. Prior to his retirement, he was the owner/operator of Gar-V Manufacturing / Fastener Coatings in Three Rivers, for more than 50 years. An avid surf fisherman, making his own fishing rods, he often was often asked by family and friends about his techniques, tackle, his favorite fishing spots, and where the “big ones” could be caught, proudly passing his knowledge and tradition down to his family and friends. He was an active member of the Nettles Island Church, as well as the Three Rivers Bible Church, in Michigan. Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Beverly J. Garvey (nee Smith); his five children, Gae Garvey, of Three Rivers, Michael Garvey, and his wife, Kay, of Fort Myers, Florida, Mitchell Garvey, and his wife, Lynelle, of Vicksburg, Michigan, Joy Garvey, of Three Rivers, and Merri Garvey-Haines, and her husband, Christopher, of Pass Christian, Mississippi; one brother, Marshall Garvey, and his wife, Fran, of Scottsdale, Arizona; one sister, Sherri-Sue Barnhill, of Ludington, Michigan; eight grandchildren, Carly Garvey-Jent, and her husband, Courtney, Joshua Garvey, and his wife, Maria, Benjamin Garvey, Garvey Douglas Haines, Max Haines, Julie Bailey, Gabe Bailey, and Nick Bailey; and two great- granddaughters, Madison and Kai-Lee Jent. He was preceded in death by his brother, Willard Garvey, his sister, Joyce Eickenberry, and his grandson, Jacob Haines. Services and Interment will be at a later date at the Three Rivers Bible Church, 220 North Erie Street, Three Rivers, Michigan 49093.
